Named after a hill that's been broadcasting since 1956.
Winterhill is a Bolton-based IT and communications company that takes its name — and its temperament — from the moorland transmitter on its doorstep.
In 1950, Lancashire Constabulary built a radio mast on the moor above Bolton. Six years later, the BBC bolted a television transmitter to the same hill. Winter Hill has been pushing the signal out across the North West ever since — through fog, snow, three changes of broadcasting technology, and one famous fire.
We named the company after it because we like the idea of a fixed, reliable thing on a hill. Sending the signal out, year after year, regardless of weather. The brand pays homage to the region's communications infrastructure heritage — and we try, in our own small way, to be a useful part of it.
Winterhill was founded by Sam, who grew up in Bolton and spent fifteen years doing IT for businesses across the North West before deciding the region deserved a better independent option than the national MSPs were offering. Same patch, same engineers, no call centres. One hour from the door.
